Russia Burns Books, Calls George Soros Charity a “Security Threat”

Book burning is alive and well in Russia, where 53 books connected to a program called “Renewal of Humanitarian Education” provided by George Soros’ Open Society Foundation were targeted in January. According to Russian media and reported by CNBC, the charity was banned in November for being a “security threat.”

A search was conducted in college libraries in Komi. The books were found at the Vorkuta Mining and Economic College and were later taken and burned. Another 427 books were taken for shredding.

The Moscow Times and other media released a government letter stating that the Open Society Foundation and Open Society Institute were “forming a perverted perception of history and making ideological directives alien to Russian ideology popular.” Russia had also claimed the organizations were “undesirable’ and represented “a threat to the foundations of the constitutional system of the Russian Federation and the security of the state.”

In July, Soros’ charity and other pro-democracy groups were accused by Russia of “soft aggression.”

According to the Open Society Foundation, the work included financing internet centers in 33 universities, developing early childhood education programs, establishing contemporary art centers, assisting scholars to travel and study internationally, and more generally, to protect the rights of the citizens and to “strengthen the rule of law in Russia.”

In a statement on its website, the charity states, “we regret the changes that have led the government to reject our support of Russian civil society and ignore the aspirations of the Russian people.”

George Soros also stated on Open Society Foundations, “We are confident that this move is a temporary aberration. ”
