End Citizens United – Bringing Fairness Back To Politics

As the political scene becomes more divided and unstable, many people feel that we are in our current predicament because of the unbalance of wealthy donors influence on campaigns. Our 2016 campaign has been the cause of many new investigations and probes. Special Counsel, Robert Mueller, has already uncovered a paper trail of $100,000 being spent in social media by Russia in 2016.

Our current campaign donations regulations are threadbare and almost impossible to enforce. This situation was made worse in 2010, when the Supreme Court ruled that campaign donations were “speech,” and therefore protected from regulation or suppression. This decision left the campaign trail wide open to wealthy donors who gave billions of dollars to their favorite candidates. Russia is not the only foreign country that has been accused of interference. There are records of Chinese Nationals donating large sum of money to Jeb Bush’s campaign.

It is easy to become discouraged by all of this information coming to surface. But there are organizations who are stepping forward to make a change. Democrats have supported such groups as “Get the Foreign Money Out of American Elections and the grassroots PAC, End Citizens United.

Also, some politicians are joining the fight to equalize the playing field. One such politician is Randy Bryce, a candidate from the 1st Congress district in Wisconsin. Bryce is challenging the current Speaker of the House, Paul Ryan. Ryan is a strong supporter of the status quo and he believes that the Supreme Court got it right in the 2010 ruling.

Bryce is facing a grueling campaign but he has been supported by some prestigious groups, such as the Democratic Party and End Citizens United. Bryce stands out in a crowd of candidates because he believes in small donations and has proven this by the type of campaign he intends to run. 82% of his contributions have come from small donors. He points out that his average campaign donation is $25 from average, working Americans.

Along with Bryce, End Citizens United recognizes that it will take institutional changes to make a difference in how politicians do business. This non-profit group uses its power and capital to support candidates that will bring real change to the campaign donor system. Founded in 2015, after the now infamous Supreme Court decision, the ECU is dedicated to doing what it takes to change politics from the inside out. End Citizens United collected over $4 million dollars in the first quarter of 2017. Predictions for the group see it making $35 million dollars more before the mid-term 2018. It will take the support of the average working American voter to bring fairness and balance back to the United States political climate.
