As the political scene becomes more divided and unstable, many people feel that we are in our current predicament because of the unbalance of wealthy donors influence on campaigns. Lacey and Larkin are the heroes immigrants need

One dark blight upon our society is the erosion of immigrant rights here in America. However, two people stand against the eradication of these rights and promote goodness for all. They are Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin.

Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin were the first people to break the news on the corruption of Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who served in the Maricopa County. The media touted him as America’s Toughest Sheriff.

The first way that he achieved this was by encouraging his police force to pick up anybody who seemed to be the typical profile of an illegal immigrant. Of course, this led to racial profiling. In addition to this, Sheriff Arpaio offered rewards for any of his police officers who brought in illegal immigrants. Once these illegal immigrants arrived at the jail, Sheriff Arpaio would lock them away in particular jail cells meant for Latinos.

The problem with this is that those jail cells routinely failed health inspections. These cells were so awful that several Latinos died from being held there. Of course, while these evils are indeed atrocious, we also find the Arpaio was mismanaging the money of his department, to the point it may even be considered laundering.

Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin broke the news of these atrocities on their two media outlets, the Phoenix New Times and the Village Voice media.

Word on the street was that Sheriff Joe Arpaio wanted revenge on Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin because they reported on these facts. Those rumors turned out to be right in the middle of October when Arpaio and his gang of thugs pulled up to Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin’s homes and illegally detained them. In fact, this detention only occurred after Sheriff Arpaio illegally asked them to destroy all records of his crimes.

In a bit of irony, Sheriff Joe Arpaio locked Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin into the same disgusting cells that he threw the Latinos. At that moment, Sheriff Arpaio thought he had won. However, history would have the story told differently.

The national outcry against Sheriff Arpaio was great as citizens from both sides of the political spectrum joined hands and demanded the immediate release of these two innocent citizens.
