Omar Yunes, franchisee of 13 Japanese Sushi Itto chain restaurants, is an award-winning Mexican entrepreneur. The popular chain restaurant has been in business for over 25 years and continues to expand into Central and South America. At a young age of 21, Omar Yunes invested into his first franchise of Sushi Itto, and now accounts for 10% of the corporation’s market. Yunes owns restaurants throughout Mexico City, Puebla and Vera Cruz that employ 400 workers in total.
In 2015, Omar Yunes won the Best Franchisee of the World award in Florence, Italy. After being presented with the award, Yunes expressed gratitude to his 400 employees, who he felt collaborated in his success. Benjamin Cancelmo, the CEO of Sushi Itto, acknowledged the award and its representation of the duos combined efforts to consistently provide a quality product while achieving excellent customer service.
Omar Yunes says his secret to running a successful franchise is largely due to picking the right business as a partner. The franchise must be knowledgeable of its market and have the ability to teach the franchisee how to effectively run the business. Yunes considers himself an amateur when it comes to knowing how to run a restaurant, but a professional at administrating. He warns entrepreneurs not to assume franchising will be an automatic success, and that sometimes businesses just do not work out. To know more about him click here.
The 2015 competition had participants from around the world representing 34 countries. Each franchisee was evaluated on the influence they had on social media, not just their branding. The participants’ knowledge, innovation, and leadership were also analyzed through their business models. The organizer of the contest in Mexico, Diego Elizarrarrás, praises Yunes’ influence on the franchise Sushi Itto. Elizarrarrás believes that Yunes placed Mexico on an international scale for franchises by winning first place in the competition, both nationally and worldwide.
